Truman asks $39 billion to battle Japs

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Truman asked Congress today to provide the army with $39,019,790,474 to finance the attack on Japan.

He transmitted the military budget for the July 1 fiscal year, calling for new appropriations of $21,963,093,400, the reappropriation of unobligated balances from prior appropriations totaling $8,818,195,574, and estimated recoveries from contract cutbacks and terminations totaling $8,238,501,500.

The total program represents a reduction from a preliminary estimate of $45,500,000,000 which was included in the regular budget submitted by President Roosevelt last January.


Truman will attend Governors’ Conference

WASHINGTON (UP) – President Truman has made definite plans to attend the annual Governors’ Conference at Mackinac Island, Michigan, July 3 and 4, the White House announced today.

The President has been invited to address the conference and will do so if work permits him to attend.

JAMESTOWN, New York (UP) – A twister which swept through here Sunday injured eight persons and caused $1,500,000 damage, officials estimated today.

The twister hit Jamestown from the west during an electrical storm and within a minute traveled through the downtown section, damaging or destroying about 75 buildings.
