Pope sends message to FDR; Taylor soon to revisit Vatican

Rome, Italy (UP) –
Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark, commander of the U.S. 5th Army, has revealed that at the request of Pope Pius XII, he has cabled President Roosevelt the Pontiff’s warm regards and wishes. The Pope asked Gen. Clark to send such a message when he received him in audience yesterday.

Clark reported the Pope had expressed satisfaction with the speed with which the AMG had made relief arrangements in cooperation with the Vatican relief agencies.

Myron C. Taylor, President Roosevelt’s special envoy to the Vatican, will go to Rome shortly on another special mission, usually-reliable Vatican circles reported today.

Used passenger cars put under price control

Washington (UP) –
Price Administrator Chester Bowles today brought all used passenger cars under price control, effective July 10, and established specific prices for different models at levels which prevailed last January.

May commandeer travel space for wounded

Washington (UP) –
Defense Transportation Director J. Monroe Johnson, in what amounted to a stay-at-home request to would-be summer vacationists, today advised the public that railroad and bus space may be commandeered without notice because of returning invasion casualties.

First wounded arrive in England by plane

London, England (UP) –
The first wounded to be evacuated by air from Allied beachheads on the Cherbourg Peninsula in France arrived in England early today, Allied headquarters announced.

Fireworks company heads guilty in fraud case

Rochester, New York (UP) –
Four officials of the Antonelli Fireworks Company of Spencerport were found guilty by a federal grand jury today of conspiracy to defraud the government, but acquitted on sabotage charges.

Debt limit boosted, cabaret tax slashed

Washington (UP) –
President Roosevelt has signed the bill increasing the national debt limit to $260 billion and reducing the cabaret tax from 30 to 20 percent, the White House announced today.

Navy yard explosion kills 2, injures 6

Vallejo, California –
A thundering explosion which ripped up the reinforced concrete floor of Machine Shop 31 in Mare Island Navy Yard killed two men early today and injured six others, two of them critically, 12th Naval District headquarters announced.
