Berne, Switzerland (UP) –
U.S. bombers and German fighter planes fought a battle over eastern Switzerland, and a Flying Fortress was shot down by Swiss anti-aircraft batteries which joined in the action, it was announced officially today.
A communiqué said several bombs were dropped on Swiss soil, causing material damage but no casualties.
Air alarms were sounded over a considerable area of eastern Switzerland, the announcement said. Additional details were promised later.
The Hungarian news agency quoted official sources that “Anglo-Saxon planes in several waves penetrated into the southwestern airspace of the country” around noon CET (6:00 a.m. ET). A Hungarian broadcast said the raiders flew along the “westerly frontier to the north.”
