Stimson 75 today; eschews celebration

Washington (UP) –
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson was 75 today, but aside from congratulatory messages from his general staff and other officials, no special ceremony was planned. He was at his desk as usual.

Stimson is the oldest member of the Cabinet but despite his years is one of the capital’s most active officials. Next is age among Cabinet members are Secretary of State Hull, 71, and Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, 68.

South Pacific.
On September 19, Army heavy bombers (Boeing Flying Fortresses) bombed Gizo Island and bombed and strafed shore installations at Rekata Bay.

On September 20, Navy and Marine Corps Douglas dive bombers attacked and damaged a Japanese cruiser northwest of Guadalcanal and bombed shore installations at Rekata Bay.

Patrol activity on Guadalcanal was minor during September 18 and September 19, but increased somewhat on September 20. Our positions remain intact.

Bund’s constitution introduced at trial

The constitution of the German-American Bund was introduced in evidence in Manhattan Federal Court today at the trial of 25 Bund leaders to show that, under the “leadership principle” which governs Nazis, all Bund members were subject to the commands of Gerhard William Kunze, national Bund Führer.

Kunze and 24 others are on trial for conspiracy to violate the Selective Service Act by counseling Bund members to evade military service.

Sydney, Australia (UP) –
An unidentified sailor from New Jersey today was charged in Brisbane police court with attempting to obtain shipping information useful to the enemy and harmful to the interests of the Australian commonwealth. He was turned over to United States naval authorities for trial.
