North Pacific Area.
On the afternoon Of July 5, a U.S. submarine, operating in the Aleutian Islands, torpedoed and is believed to have sunk a Japanese destroyer in the vicinity of Kiska.

This is the fifth enemy destroyer to have been sunk or damaged by our submarines in this area during the 2-day period (July 4-5).

Low visibility continues in this area.

Earthquakes recorded; may be in the Aleutians

New York –
Two earthquake shocks of heavy intensity, which may have been centered in the Aleutian Island chain, were recorded by the Fordham University seismograph today.

The first tremor occurred at 3:06 a.m. (EWT) and the second at 3:15. Their epicenter was approximately 4,400 miles northwest.

The Aleutians, the Northern Pacific war theater, are regarded by scientists as second only to Japan as a locale for earthquakes.

The Fourth Command ordered a preliminary (yellow) air raid alert and radio silence in the Los Angeles area last night due to presence of an unidentified target, later identified as friendly. The alert was ordered at 10:06 and the all-clear was given at 10:19 p.m.
