Yamashita sentence to die by hanging delights Wainwright

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP, Dec. 8) – Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright, who surrendered at Corregidor to the Japanese in 1942, was asked today what he thought of the result of Yamashita’s trial.

“I am delighted,” was the grim response. He added, in a milder tone, “I hope it [the death sentence by hanging] is put into effect.”

Gen. Wainwright is spending a few days resting here before continuing to New York to assume command of the Eastern Defense Command on January 15.
