HI Guys ! I remember hearing a story here in Halifax of A Uboat crew that was captured just off shore . and when they were searched they had theatre tickets for a movie dated the day before they were sunk . According to the story some of the crew came ashore and dressed in civilian clothes and went to a movie , than later went back to the sub . This is a common story that has been repeated many times . it is one of those my best friend’s brother 's wife 's cousin saw this, tales of this nature have been around for nearly 80 years . where do you think these stories come from ? there is another that a u boat went up the Colorado River with orders to torpedo the Hoover Dam but the boat was somehow sunk and is still on the bottom of the river . another someone heard this somewhere stories . it is obviously a myth …
I remember hearing this in high school in Northern BC from a WW2 veteran. From some quick research I did today Unless it is a military secret no U Boat crews surrendered in Canadian waters until the Germans surrendered in 1945. The crew of U-190 surrendered to the Canadian Navy a couple hundred miles off the coast of Newfoundland and was escorted to St. John’s then the crew was taken off the boat and then were taken to Halifax where they were processed and treated as POWs.
As far as I understand this was the only crew of submariners to surrender in North America.
As to the second story never heard that one.

Is it possible that they had retrieved a spy who then folded himself into the crew? That might account for the movie ticket.
I think the whole spy thing is probably where this myth started. German submarines did indeed drop off agents on the American east coast most we’re captured by the FBI another law enforcement agencies. Some even turn to start working to the allies. Possibly as this story about dropping off spies filter down through the military it liking the other Legend morphed into the movie ticket story. Like they say most Legends I based on fact
I think you are right on the money here! Always astounding to see how fact and fiction mix as soon as propaganda gets its hands on the news…even in this day and age be sure to factcheck and don’t take anything for granted.
