What was the state of the Vichy French army after the disaster of 1940?

Hey Indy Neidell! I have a question about Vichy France in World war two. After the fall of France, and the creation of the Vichy regime, what was the state of their army? Was it an independent force or very reliant on Germany, and how did it perform in places like Syria and Madagascar?

Others can answer better than me but…

The Vichy French Army was a puppet army with little in the way of autonomy due to the Nazis not trusting the French and not giving them freedom of choice per se.

They were kept under tight control and relegated to mostly guard and patrol duties and keeping the peace in the civilian population in the free French area and its colonies and were not used in frontline combat due to not being trusted by the Germans.

After the war many Vichy French were treated as war criminals and collaborators with the German occupiers
