What was the refugee situation during and after ww2?

During the war a lot of people got displaced. And after the fighting stopped a lot of countries was under new leadership like in the east.
What governed where people was supposed to go? How did split families find back together?
How long was the main part of this process?
I also remember reading about ww2 refugee camps that still was functioning in the mid-1950.
