I mean quick look at the map shows that German navy had to be somehow engaged in capturing Estonian islands, but we never heard a thing about it. Also with captured soviet naval bases in Tallinn and Riga, and also with allied Finland port of Helsinki - could not Kriegsmarine bring some capital ships [or just a pair of heavy cruisers] and start shelling sieged Leningrad?
Were they too afraid of soviets subs and mines? Or maybe the ice? Or was it simple logistic problem of fuel and shells?
It was proven many times [later in the war] that capital ships could bring havoc and destruction to land troops in scale not possible to planes and it was also cheaper and more precise. It looks like few weeks of shelling [something similar to what Japanese were doing later at Henderson Field] could turn the scales of Leningrad siege…
Also were there any combined operations of Kriegsmarine and Wehrmacht during Barbarossa? For sure army had to somehow get to Sarema, Hiiumaa and other islands, but i am asking more about fire support from sea during capturing soviet lands near shore…
