General Henri Winkelman was Commander of the army and navy of the Netherlands. Later, upon the exile of the cabinet and royalty, he became Commander and Chief of the entire country. General Winkelman surrendered his country to the Germans on May 15, 1940. On July 2, 1940, the Germans arrested him as a prisoner of war. He remained a prisoner of war until his release on May 12, 1945.
