How did the Portuguese colonies like Macau and the Azores fare compare to their being netural?

Macau belonged to neutral Portugal and it became a refugee camp, more than tripling its population. Japan respected Portuguese neutrality, but only to a point in Macau and East Timor. Had Portugal opened the Azores to the Allies and honored its long alliance with Britain, that may well have changed quickly.
