The Bulgarian navy was mostly limited to patrol duty and laying mines along the Black and Aegean seas. Around 6 Soviet submarines were sunk by these mines.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain operational details since the Navy’s archive was confiscated by the Red Army and remains in Russia to this day.

Tsar Boris III had resisted all attempts made by Hitler to pressure Bulgaria into joining the war against the Soviets as Bulgarian troops had not been involved in Operation Barbarossa. Boris also did not allow Bulgarian volunteers to fight the USSR. As for the navy, several skirmishes took place in the Black Sea where the Bulgarian shipping was attacked.
