Week by Week American Civil War

Recently, Matt Walsh announced and released an American Civil War documentary, the trailer for which opens with deeply partisan messaging and arguably a revisionist retelling of history. Atun-Shei Films has done excellent work over the years debunking these narratives, identifying The Lost Cause myth promoted by the United Daughters of the Confederacy as a key source of these arguments. For years, I’ve thought that TimeGhost could do an extremely effective job at reporting a fair and unbiased history of the ACW, with all the complex political narratives that inevitably go alongside warfare. During COVID, I read Road to Disunion Vol. 1 by Freehling and was captivated by the longevity of the struggle for and against slavery, which eventually culminated in outright conflict.

It’s my understanding that TimeGhost have strayed away from this for the time being because of a lack of b-roll and video footage (I believe someone asked about either ACW or Napoleonic period, I could be wrong). After they’ve completed upcoming projects, especially with the current climate in the States, do you think this should be their next project? How can they make up for the lack of video footage? Would it be worth doing a pre-American Civil War mini-series, covering the 3/5ths compromise, Nat Turner, Nullification, American Colonisation Society, the Missouri compromise, etc.?

P.S. A little thank you for all the work you guys do! It’s captivating, well-written, and superbly researched.

If you have seen the 1990 Ken Burns series on the subject it is my understanding that he and his creative team pioneered camera techniques to help overcome this dearth of any kind of video/film. They take photo stills and give the illusion of movement by moving the camera, so it is possible in a way to keep it visually “alive”, instead of just a flat photograph. I cannot recall exactly, but I believe he discussed it live many years ago on NPR, if my memory serves me, it may have been the Dianne Rehm’s show. I remember the interview, just don’t recall the exact show on Public Radio.
