After China insisted on a withdrawal of Soviet forces from Xinjang in 1942, The Soviet Union delayed until the spring of 1944. Was there a chance of fighting between the Soviet Union and China over Xinjang in 1943?
I dont think so since they had japan as common hostile country, but i’m not very sure…
The Soviets were not at war with Japan yet and had signed a NAP. That said, China was indeed very busy and would not have had time to worry about Xinjiang
I think the Soviets were more concerned with the Eastern Front than with China.
I don’t think so. The Soviets had interests in Xinjiang in the early 1940s, but were kicked out by longtime boss Sheng Shical in 1942. But then, he asked them to come back in 1944 (trying the difficult going from independent warlord to Soviet friend to Nationalist friend to Soviet friend maneuver).
The Soviets in 1944 were not interested in returning to the local (to them) politics; they wanted to keep playing the loyal Ally, and the Americans were intent on keeping China in the war, and a Soviet intervention would have upset that applecart.
So, I don’t think in 1943 they would have had any more interest in cutting pieces out of China because they didn’t want to make things difficult with the US, in the middle of fighting the Germans, who in 1943 were still plenty dangerous.
