Was the US Civil Air Patrol used for spotting subs?

This article mentiones the CAP in WW2. They do cool stuff but did they als spot subs and to what effect.

Ill start this by admitting I don’t know much on the Civil Air Patrol (Despite both my Grandpa and Great Grandpa being officers in it during the war)so bear with me here. I believe that was a main feature for them as the fear of Submarines was very real despite there only being a few examples of Submarines making it to the US

I first heard about them from the excellent A2A Cessna flight simulation (FSX add-on) and saw them flying about. Their website has some history.
