When I was a kid, I watched a WWII movie from which I only remember a single scene that left a huge impact on me. The scene showed German soldiers getting ready to fire at the civilians in some village. However, one of the German soldiers simply put his rifle down, came to the civilians and stood beside them. He was shot with the civilians. This sort of shows how German Wehrmacht has nothing in common with cruel fanatical SS troops and they’re also just soldiers fighting on the wrong side. I dunno how true to life this scene was, but I would assume there were such occurrences throughout the front. Were they common, or could soldier refuse to fire at civilians without being executed himself? And while on the topic, were there any such cases in other armies, perhaps in Japanese or Soviet (later when they gained the upper hand in war)? Thank you guys. Love the show, keep up the great work.
