Wallace changes mind on Dewey re-election
NEW YORK (UP) – Henry A. Wallace, here for a last-minute political rally tonight, predicted that Republican Gov. Thomas E. Dewey would win re-election over U.S. Sen. James M. Mead, Democratic candidate in tomorrow’s election.
“It is easy for the Democrats to say Mead is going to win,” Mr. Wallace told a Brooklyn audience last night. “Well, I know he is not going to win.” His prediction was received in stony silence.”
However, at two later rallies, the former secretary of commerce modified his statement, “I made a mistake and said in the first meeting tonight that Mead would be beaten,” he said, “but with support like this anything can happen.”
