The wreck of the USS Johnston (sunk during the Battle off Samar in Oct. 1944) has been identified in the Phillippine Trench.

This is the book about the battle of Samar. Very brave people indeed.

It’s always a delight when they find the wreck of another noble fighting ship. Considering the fierceness of her last battle, Johnston is in remarkable good condition. Forward guns mounts and bridge all still almost perfectly intact. That’s the thing with warship wrecks, in death they still embody the personalitites they took on in life. Small wonder, then, that Johnston sit upright, proud and defiant.
