U.S. Army losses rise to 134,632

Washington (UP) –
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson announced today that U.S. Army casualties through March 23 total 134,632, including 23,322 killed, 55,066 wounded, 28,014 missing and 28,230 prisoners of war.

Of the wounded, Mr. Stimson said in his news conference, 28,977 have been returned to duty, while 1,677 of the prisoners of war were reported to have died of diseases in prison camps, mostly in Jap-held territory.

The latest announced total for Navy casualties was 44,049, of which 18,749 were listed as dead, 11,505 wounded, 9,374 missing and 4,421 prisoners of war.

Navy casualties included Marines right? The only way to explain the POW’s. So I guess stupid question. The amazing thing about how big and messy this war was is the number of missing. People today would not understand that imho.

Makes me wonder how close we are to electronic dog tags. People put apple devices in their luggage to track them. Clearly we can’t have that but I can see us heading towards implanted devices on soldiers.
