Throwing back to b2w

I’m not sure why in the Russian civil wars that it appeared as if the new countries in Eastern Europe were on the offensive. If self-determination was to be the ultimate goal, then a defensive posture would have been the best policy because to sustain an offensive campaign seems historically to need a much more cohesive military and civilian will to maintain the attack then when one is defending what is their homeland. I figure there is no real right answer to this issue but from my view if, for instance, Ukraine, where to have a defensive posture then they might have achieved the goal of national self rule much more easily then trying to crush the military forces of Bolshevik Russia as a brand new nation. Is it hubris? The Moltke-Hitler-esque concept of belief that the defeat of the enemy while they were still considered weak? I understand the channel is not Alternate History but I figure that the fans on the forum could help me with a few reasons in their own perspectives. Thanks comrades
