But vague intel let him down.

The Japanese Ambassador did not decode a war declaration to give to Hull so even if it had been in time, it wouldn’t have made the threat clear. He was going to be embarassed in any case.

The 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora! really fudges this point and it strongly implies that it is a formal war declaration.

Planes from Enterprise flight deck were actually at, or near Pearl on that morning.

Not to spoil this great topic but Gregg in this video claimed a Catalina (Flying boat) fired the first shots before the US ward moved in to sink a mini-sub? Not sure what is true, Gregg does use a lot of original research by digging though stacks of reports and Aircraft manuals (which are by nature very technical). This in a video just out today.

Also all Cats on the ground except for 1 were destroyed. Also 7 were out flying. Gregg makes a point these were a high value targets as well because of their range. The Cat is apart from being gorgeous a plane which did a lot more that I knew. In spite of the fact that the mere flying speed etc makes it look unimportant and boring at first site compared to fighters. Yet, after Pearl the Grumpy Cats did find their way around its limitations (see the vid).

(I am not saying TG is wrong and Gregg is right)
