The valiant Defenders of Ukraine

I think it is no suprise that parties not involved are not just watching the conflict, but are also actively studying it. The doctrines of war of modern militaries have not developed much in terms of conventional warfare as most warfare has been very asymmetrical in the past few decades. Now that a large conflict is happening where the warfare is much more conventional with active frontlines, modern technology is being used and quickly integrated into new military doctrine.

It’s better for there to be no war, but you would be a fool not to study it.

Very reminiscent of the Spanish Civil war. Armies trying new weapons studying for new ideas. Maybe this isn’t as impactful as there has been continuous war for 20 years but certainly drone and anti drone and any automated warfare is being tested.

Yes, but this time Ukraine has no weapons embargo from the demokratic world, and Germany has chanced a bit. There are not unarmed Germans arriving in Ukraine but supply. To people in Europe Ukraine and Ukrainias are next door.

Yeah there are lot of other wars like Yemen :yemen: which are drone heavy and don’t make much news but there are a lot of drone attacks there as well. The Ukraine war in that respect is just another which looks more than an old Cold War limited proxy war.

Maybe more study should be done in cases were war was prevented or no new wars were begun.

Here is an article on drone swarms. And of course new weapons are applied but weapon system like the hi speed cannon and others were being used and tested already. The Ukraine is also a sudden boon for arms companies.

Also drone swarms are not new, pilots are becoming drone managers.

I wonder when the outcome of the research on who blew up the pipeline comes out. Meanwhile a lot of people blame the US. Note the date

I believe the biggest difference between the Russian/Ukrainian war and other conflicts using drones is that in this conflict you have two modern well equipped and trained militaries facing off against each other and have two very different and distinct uses of drones.

The Ukrainians use drones for surveillance, targeting, precision bombing and psychological warfare against the enemy soldiers to great effect and also have found other uses nobody had seriously considered before like weaponizing small drones with grenades and small explosive devices to great effect.

The Russians do use their drones for the same purpose but also use them to intentionally attack civilian targets in what basically amounts to war crimes under the Geneva conventions.

This is a conflict every major military power in the world is watching with great interest because western weapons are proving far superior to Russian weapons and how each country uses said weapons which again has proved very effective for Ukraine and a disaster for Russia.

A evaluation of small drones from Germany, in German but the automatic translation of subtitles works:

“Is it a drone or a bird, that is the question”

“Drones have arived to stay”

I love them discussing how to convert civilian drones to military use. I can picture wackos all over taking notes lol.

View from an ex arms inspector on how to start negotiations and some needed memories of the 1980s. You don’t have to agree to all but nuclear arms control is still relevant.

I have a lot of problems with Scott Ritter and his history. Here he is right though. We should be talking at least.

Philosophy and history:

It’s thought that around 89,000 of the conscripts called up have been sent to the front lines in Ukraine and it is estimated that 22% of them have been killed or wounded (around 19,500) and upwards of a further 11,000 have either being captured, deserted or gone MIA or roughly 34% of the total which is a very high number.

So far roughly (estimates only)

70,000 Russians have been killed
282,000 wounded
33,000 MIA
1000-20,000 are POW (nobody knows exact numbers neither side has released numbers)

On the Ukrainian side (estimates only)

19,000-24,000 killed (early on in the war estimates had upwards of 39,000 killed but have been downgraded considerably due to better reporting on causalities from both Ukraine and western observers)
57,000 wounded
8,000 MIA
1000-10,000 POW

Equipment losses for the Russians is estimated at around 11,000-12,000 vehicles, tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery, planes and helicopters, ships and other equipment

Ukrainian losses initially were high but since the start of the war they now have a net gain of equipment in armour, vehicles and equipment from NATO and other western countries as well as donations from the Russian military.

I am not sure about the net gain, but the support is multilateral and summs up:

Those numbers are awful for the Russians. It’s a 5:1 casualty ratio. Even as an attacker it’s horrible.

But the numbers are unconfirmed numbers from Ukraine. The Ukrainians are the people we support, but we should not expect that their numbers are true.

Even if you take on 50% of the Rissiam figure as true and double the Ukrsimian lisses, it’s a poor Russian showing.
