The pre-War/War Soviet and Nazi Spying Operations

  1. How sophisticated were the Soviets at spying in the 1930’s?
  2. How did the Soviets get to be so dangerous as spies?
  3. Just who was compromised by Soviet spying? I think most people generally acknowledge that William Dodd, the American ambassador to Nazi Germany, was somewhat compromised because his daughter was a Communist spy, but there were definitely many others. What about Henry Wallace?

  1. How sophisticated were the Nazis at spying in the 1930’s? They seemed to have used very different methods than the Soviets.
  2. How many prominent people did the Nazis compromise? How compromised was Joe Kennedy? I see Joe Kennedy as the Nazi’s answer to William Dodd in that they both were ambassadors compromised to some degree by foreign powers.
