The Forgotten Coast Guard

Hello to every one on the Timeghost Team. I ask my in dedication to my grandfather, Kasper J. Kfoury, who as of March 15th passed away, and to all other Coast Guard Vets. My grandfather served as a Petty Officer - 2nd Class and was stationed in Brooklyn New York. I know my grandfather dealt with port security and sometimes guarded German/Italian POWS. My question is what were the other duties of coast guard service men stationed in the mainland ports? I personally feel that the Coast Guard is often forgotten in the retelling of World War II. If at all possible it would mean the world if you can retell this brief story about my Grandfather.

While stationed in Brooklyn, NY Kasper became an instant leader among his fellow servicemen when visiting British allies on leave boasted that their country had it over ours because due to the fact they had a king and the U.S didn’t. After the cheers of the Brits settled, Kasper coolly retorted to the visitors, “Well, in this country an ace beats a king every time.” After the thunderous cheers of the Americans, thereafter, while serving his country, he was fondly referred to as Ace

If he were in the Army, I would’ve asked “was he at Fort Hamilton at some point?”

And I agree, the Coast Guard’s efforts in WWII really are underappreciated. This was the only war wherein a Coast Guardsman was awarded the MOH (albeit posthumously).

May the Lord bless you and your grandfather in the heavens.
