The Cost of War

I often heard lines like “over a million shells were fired in this attack” in the clips…
How much was the average shell? And by comparison, how much would an average soldier earn?
What, if any, compensation, would be paid to a dead soldier’s family? Did the cost of the war ever impact on military decisions like when or how to attack?

I know the governments went bankrupt to pay for the war, but it would be fascinating to hear how they organized the finances behind the scenes, (i.e. what did the world banking system respond) and what efforts were made to preserve domestic resources (such as rubber) as well as money (bonds).

thanks
Simon
