SKILLED WORKERS ORDERED DEFERRED
Washington, May 3 (UP) –
Deputy Selective Service Director Brig. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey tonight ordered all local draft boards to use the “utmost care” in selecting skilled defense workers for military service to insure “that the nation’s manpower will be used with the very maximum of efficiency.”
Following up President Roosevelt’s announcement of May 2 ordering the production of machine tools on a 24-hour, 7-day week basis, Gen. Hershey said draft boards “must defer from service those who are necessary in the production of defense materials.”
Gen. Hershey’s orders were contained in telegrams to all state Selective Service directors.
