SENATE REJECTS PLAN TO KEEP MEN IN NAVY

Washington, June 27 (UP) –
The Senate Naval Affairs Committee rejected today the Navy’s request for emergency legislation to enable it to retain men in service throughout the national emergency, regardless of the termination date of their enlistments.

The committee, however, approved legislation which would require all future volunteers in the Navy to serve beyond the expiration of their enlistments if Congress proclaimed that the national welfare was “imperiled.”
