Sea change in the Pacific 8-31-1943

On this date the USS Essex finally sees combat action against the Japanese with an Assault on Marcus Island. Also on September 1st the F6F hellcat scores it’s first air kill.

These two weapon systems outclass anything the Japanese have and as they are the first of many show now that Japan can no longer compete qualitatively or numerically with the Americans.

Indeed, the Hellcat unique has safety and easy to fly features that will keep pilots alive and thus killing.
