Refugees become legal immigrants
NIAGARA FALLS, New York (UP) – Ninety-two European war refugees – the first contingent of a group of 924 who have been guests of the United States for two years – hopped across the Canadian border and back again today to reenter this country as legal immigrants under quotas of their native countries.
The contingent, including several family groups, was accompanied by officials of the National Refugee Service and the U.S. Immigration Department on the bus trip from the Fort Ontario refugee center at Oswego, New York, to the formal crossing of the international boundary.
They went to the American Consulate in Niagara Falls, Ontario, for clearance and readmission to the United States. After their return here, they were taken to Buffalo, New York, to spend the night.
