Hi, I am a secondary school student who lives in Singapore. As part of our curriculum we learn about the British Surrender in Singapore and the eventual consequences of it.
But there’s a few pressing questions in my head throughout the years…
-
What was the British Strategy in the Far East in response to Japanese Aggression, was there a war plan, or existing doctrines to hold a Far East Theatre?
-
Why was Singapore so Important to British Strategy in South East Asia? Was it because of Naval Supremacy in the region? Was it because it was a gateway to the Orient?
-
and if so, what was the ideal way that Singapore was to be used in a war according to that strategy?
