PROFESSIONAL WORKERS MUST ANSWER DRAFT

Dykstra Says Their Jobs Are ‘No Excuse, Sacrifices Are Necessary’

Washington, Nov. 11 (UP) –

Draft Director Clarence A. Dykstra told professional men and proprietors of one-man commercial establishments today that they would be given ample time to “wind up their affairs” before being called for military training.

Dr. Dykstra said that such cases would be passed upon by local draft boards in the same manner as they consider the status of other registrants.

The test is the welfare of the nation and the community. Although individuaL hardships should be dealt with in each case with the greatest consideration, sacrifices are expected of everyone, and the fact that a little more sacrifice is asked of some than others is inevitable.

Cites Possible Cases

He cited two cases which he admitted would be difficult to decide. The case of a young dentist who has just graduated from school and has gone into debt to purchase equipment for practicing his profession; the case of a young lawyer who has just acquired a few clients and probably would find himself without those clients upon his return from training.

The question arises – is such a person eligible for deferment by reason of his occupation?

Obviously, a good case of disruption to the economy or society of the community cannot be made. The hardship here is not to the community, but to the individual.

Ski Troops Planned

Ski and snowshoe troops, similar to those employed by Finland in its war with Russia, will be added to the U.S. Army, the War Department announced today.

The Army already is experimenting with parachute troops and has organized several armored combat divisions because of their successful use in the European War.

Contracts have been awarded for $82,691 worth of ski and snowshoe equipment, including trousers, wind-breakers, parkas and heavy socks and mittens.

Elementary ski training will be given to the 1st Division at Fort Devens, Mass., the 5th Division at Fort Custer, Mich. and the 6trh Division which is being concentrated in the 7th Corps Area training center at Rolla, Mo.

The War Department said:

In these divisions and also in the 3rd and 41st Division at Fort Lewis, Wash., the 44th Division at Camp Dix, N.J., specially selected individuals with former skiing experience will be organized into groups for advanced training in the technique and battle tactics of fast skin patrols.
