I understand. My father saw a lot too and he’s still haunted by what he saw.

I saw a quote the other day from a marine. He said ‘I don’t have ptsd from what I saw, I have ptsd from what I did’. I can picture horror but I know I can never understand it.

My grandmother was quite the trooper too, collecting scrap for the war effort and participating in bond drives. She died when I was just 4, having barely known who she was. At a rather young age too (at least for my family history), at 75.

I and my dad went on a tour with Ed Shames the last remaining officer of the WW1.He was awesome but obviously also traumatised. Great guy and teacher on WW2. He cooperated with a historian to write a few worthwhile books.
