Later, Napoleon, the Kaiser Wilhelm 2 and Hitler wanted that too. (Probably many others as well). Waterways are less known than roads but absolutely vital).
Glad you like it. Intercontinental travel is expensive but a great way to save money is to use public transports and hostels. Xanten has a hostel but my favorite in Europe is Slot Assemburg In Heemskerk, just North of Amsterdam. It is a 13th century castle with a mote and fab castle garden.
