ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, Hiroshima – crowded industrial city of Japan – experienced the dawn of the atomic age. On August 5, 1945, a flight of U.S. bombers dropped one atomic bomb on the city. In the year since, the towering mushroom cloud has become to all the world a symbol of terrible death and destruction. Sixteen hours after the bomb dropped, President Truman announced the full story of atomic research and added, “We are now prepared to obliterate more rapidly and more completely every productive enterprise the Japanese have above ground in any city.”
