Album for commander Domestic Forces Hilversum
So shortly before the commemoration of 75 years of liberation, Mrs. Joke Buijtendorp-Dieperink gave a beautiful photo album to the Regional Archive. The joint resistance in Hilversum donated this in 1949 to her grandfather Dr. G.J. Dieperink on his departure to Haarlem.
The album contains many photos of members of the resistance in Hilversum from different groups, many of which were previously unknown. Couriers were given their own page and in addition photographs were included of post-war activities and “services” from the war years. Arms storage, falsification of identity documents, assistance to people in hiding and, for example, the news service.
It was a beautiful gift in 1949. Now, according to Dr. Geraldien von Frijtag, Drabbe Kunzel, assistant professor in Utrecht and author of the forthcoming book about WWII in Hilversum, it is an important document:
This is a unique resource. For the first time we not only see the faces behind the names in the resistance stories, but we also get a good picture of how extensive the networks of the organized resistance in Hilversum were. A quick count results in more than ten different groups, with a total of more than one hundred employees. This is probably a snapshot, at least from after the summer of 1943, but then again: the number is striking. And in addition to the well-known names of members of the resistance who sought publicity after the war, this album also portrays the many others who did not. Valuable, in short.
