On June 5, 1942, the Battle of Midway was raging. Task Force 16, under Admiral Spruance, was using the USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and their respective air groups to devastate the exposed Japanese attack force. Yamamoto’s decision to not use more submarines was a major blunder as it allowed American dive-bombers to counterattack incredibly well. Additionally, diverting forces to try to take the Aleutian Islands was a costly mistake for Japan, and the victory was a major turning point for us in the Pacific.
