Legal status or French soldiers and army personnel in the UK

Hi Indy and Crew. Your format is outstanding and I enjoy it more and more with every episode. Keep up the great work.

My question: since the French soldiers in the UK formed technically the army of the free France in 1940, I would like to know how they were treated in the UK from a legal standpoint. Were they, like the personnel of ambassies and the diplomatic corps? Especially when it comes to jurisdiction and so on. Example: would a French soldier be arrested by British police and sentenced by a British court in case of commiting a crime?

Best regards from München (a.k.a. around the corner)
