Japanese-American unit returns from Europe

NEW YORK (UP) – The Japanese-American 442nd Combat Team, the most decorated infantry unit in the Army, arrived from Europe today aboard the troopship Wilson Victory for deactivation.

Some 500 Nisei officers and men will parade before President Truman in Washington and take part in ceremonies at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, July 15.

The veterans of the 442nd, who collected 4,603 decorations in European campaigns, including 42 Distinguished Service Crosses and 3,600 Purple Hearts, were presented with 1,200 leis sent from Hawaii. About 250 of the Nisei are from Hawaii. The others are mostly from the West Coast.
