This myth seems to come from adolf galland, messerschmitt already had bomber variants ready before the jet was presented to hitler. They planned multiple variants, some with interesting fuselage configuration:
J-C Mermet made a text about it in his special number on the me 262 for aero journal:
Edit: I think at least a sticked comment need to be done on the myth, a lot have already pointed it out.
You mean Jet Bomber variants? Or piston ones?
bomber variant, not piston. Multiple schnellbomber variant were planned for it before hitler visit.
Not sure, were those planes more than drawings?
Drawing a Me 262 with bombs under it is mostly an hour of work.
But like Indy said, the bombing mechanism, calculating weight and balance, take of performance, safety, structural changes and then making a FLYING prototype is a LOT more work and would be basically a major changed plane.
E.g. the Ground Attack variants of the Spitfire were different from the high altitude interceptors.
I am not trying to be difficult here but I know a little about Warbirds and Jets. The Me-262 was a tricky plane to fly and build with substandard materials (slaves somehow miss motivation and career propects .
Actually making it a bomber wasn’t the trickiest part, the 262 had engine issue and there was the change of landing gears configuration. I also reccall there were some vibration issues as well. The drawings for those projects do show that that the bomber version was already planned and I reccall messerschmitt was considering other solutions for further improving the 262 aerodynamic with the HG variant (amusing hobby got one out recently btw). The 262 also isn’t what I’d call a war winning weapon or that it coudl’ve changed it forthe luftwaffe, they didn’t had the fuel and the ally could get the 262 too.
