Truman signs bill

WASHINGTON, July 2 (Reuter) – President Truman today signed the Indian Immigration Bill.

Under the terms of the Bill, 75 “Eastern Hemisphere Indians” will be permitted to enter the United States every year.

The Bill also provides for naturalisation of the Indians in the United States and for naturalisation of those who chose to immigrate to the United States.

The author of the Bill, Democrat Congressman Emanuel Celler of New York stood by the President as he put signature to the measure.

Later Mr. Celler stated, “This Bill does simple justice long overdue. The people of India were brothers in war and allies in battle, and it would be immoral to continue to view them otherwise in peace. I am certain that the passage of this Bill and its enactment into law will cement further the goodwill existing between the two countries and will aid greatly the development of greater cultural and commercial exchange between the two.”

Under the terms of the Bill 3,000 Indian nationals now living in the United States can qualify for United States citizenship.
