If Great Britain fell to the Germans how realistic would an invasion by either the Germans or the Japanese of North America be? This is portrayed in the TV show The Man in the High Castle.
Not at all possible without the British flipping to the Axis. Something to consider is that by the end of the war, Canada itself had the world’s fourth-largest navy, although I can’t tell you dispositions.
The other thing to consider is that nukes are WAY overrated. Nuclear weapons in the numbers that would have been available in WW2 numbers could not by themselves have forced Germany or the UK or America out of the war if the political will didn’t break. The Japanese were starving to death, facing an invasion from Korea and/or Sakhalin by the USSR which they couldn’t defend against because their navy was gone.
Even the effects of nuclear weapons are today are vastly overplayed, certainly insofar that nuclear weapons don’t eject stuff into the atmosphere high enough to cause global cooling and the explosion of Mount Tabora (1815) which had the power of a thermonuclear war in a small area only caused 18 months of climate change, most of which was unnoticed south of about 40 degrees latitude.
What nukes do in practice is not threaten to destroy mankind, anthrax would do that far better, but they make wars unwinnable. They are objects of stalemate. Nuking New York as per Man in the High Tower wouldn’t work, not among the people at least. Bombing civilians only make them angry and want to resist to the bitter end.
I’m gonna link to Lessons not learned by the Spanish Civil War:
By 90 seconds in he’s talking about the Italian bombings of Barcelona, but you see this China, including when the Japanese are bombing with PLAGUE, you see it in the Blitz, you see it in the baby blitz and you see it in the bombing campaigns over Germany.
I n MITHT, it wouldn’t have worked to because the Germans would have had to cut a deal with the American elites in order to facilitate peace, and without the threat of proper invasion, all you can do is convince the ruling elites that continuing the war threatens their control at home. MITHT has the American elites almost completely displaced.
Now what the Germans COULD have done is cut off American internal coastal shipping, they had to stand off rockets for subs that could be fired underwater from 1943, but they didn’t have guidance systems. There’s a potential solution but it’s so outlandish no one would take it seriously if I told you.
