How much good did working with the mafia do for the invasion of Italy?

I just started reading The Politics of Heroin and the first chapter is about the creation of Lucky Luciano’s crime syndicate that moved heroin into the U.S. It started with the Office of Naval Intelligence trying to investigate a fire on the Normandie and eventually mafia members worked as guides and provided information about the Italian troops. Was it generally effective in making the invasions of Sicily and Italy? What kind of problems did the Allies have with letting mobsters run city governments?
