How effective in the field were the early german camouflage designs?

It is widely known that the German camoufleurs of the 1940s were considered the fathers of the art of modern camouflage design, with the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS issuing quite a lot of variants of camouflage designs. How effective were they in the field to provide an edge to the regular infantryman when trying to be as inconspicuous as possible, especially the earlier models like the Heeres-Splittermuster 31?
