How did the Japanese mimic American artillery fire to convince the US soldiers they were being shelled with friendly fire?

I cannot remember where I heard this. Can you confirm if/how the Japanese used their artillery on US soldiers at the same time US artillery was firing so as to trick the US solders into believing they were being fired at by their own side? Thank you for your time.
