Battleship Barham sunk, British admit

London, Jan. 27 (UP) –
The Admiralty said today that the British battleship Barham was sunk Nov. 25.

The Admiralty said:

Loss of the ship was not announced earlier since it was clear at the time that the enemy did not know she had been sunk and it was important to make certain dispositions before the loss of the ship was made public.

It was understood that casualties resulting from the sinking of the 31,100-ton Barham totaled more than 500.

German and Italian communiqués several times haver claimed damage to or destruction of the Barham. Jan. 18 the official German news agency DNB said the Barham had been torpedoed and sunk off Sollum, Egypt, on Nov. 26. Today the German High Command said that the submarine which torpedoed the Barham was commanded by Commander Baron von Tiesenhausen.
