History has a way of being forgotten

There is no questions here just reflections on history and what it means today. Basically it’s just me rambling.

Today is June 6th which is a very significant date for many of us as this is the day that the allies landed on Normandy. To commemorate this occasion at one point in time veterans would do a parade through the city to remind us of what they accomplished and the freedoms we enjoy. Sadly as more and more veterans said their final goodbyes the parades eventually stopped and people went about their everyday lives. I still remember this day as it was how I was raised but for many others my age and even younger it is a footnote in history now even though it was one of the most significant moments in the past 200 years.

Enter the recent generations of young people under the age of 30 the vast majority of which consider Dday a historical footnote with no real bearing on their lives today. Most older teens and young adults when asked will not be able to tell you what happened on this date 91 years ago as it has no real impact on their day to day lives now.

I do get it as it happened long before they were born and really don’t understand the significance of this date or other dates in WW2 aside from what they learn in the movies and if they cared what they learned in school. For many of these younger people for them it matters more about the war in Afghanistan as for Canadair was its longest war in recent history. To a lesser degree Desert Storm and the war in former Yugoslavia also has bearing on the younger generation.

Even now for many Afghanistan is slowly becoming another footnote in history as too many documentaries focus on the politics behind the war and not what actually happened in the field.

In the end many things we learned about as kids are in danger of being forgotten especially things like the Holocaust, Dday, VE and VJ day and every other conflict up until the early 90s.
