I was wondering what the inscription on my great-great-uncle’s tombstone meant. From what my grandfather(Allan’s nephew) told me, he was involved in underwater demolitions & was wounded on June 5th, 1944 while trying to clear obstacles for the D-Day landings. How accurate this story is I don’t know, but I thought I should give some context.
It appears to me that he was a U.S. Army Technician Fourth Grade, and he was in the Signal Corps (“3 ARMD SIGNAL BN”)
And it appears that he was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. I salute thee!
Would a U.S. Army Technician Fourth Grade ever be given the task of clearing underwater obstacles in preparation for an amphibious landing?
That I’m not sure of, though their tasks were combat-related.
He was a hero who died way too young.
I double checked with Pa-Paw(my grandfather) & he says the injuries’ from that event wear bad enough that he never saw active duty for the rest of the war, though he thinks Allan died because of heart problems.
I’m sorry it sounds like he had serious issues from injuries. Imho and adult who dies at 45 is way too young. Thanks to him and men like him, I have been able to grow older in relative peace and prosperity.
