London, April 12 (UP) –
The War Office said today that General Carton de Wiart of the British Army had “fallen into enemy hands while on his way to the Middle East.”

No further details were available immediately, although Rome had reported that General de Wiart, who participated in last year’s campaign in Norway, had been taken prisoner in North Africa.

The Belgian-born officer, who became a British citizen, has been wounded more than 30 times in his military career, which began in the Boer War. He is 60 years old. He lost an eye and a hand in France in the World War.
