‘Cotton Ed’ Smith to oppose Roosevelt
Columbia, South Carolina (AP) – (Aug. 21)
Senator E. D. “Cotton Ed” Smith, administration foe who was defeated in the Democratic primary last month in his bid for a seventh term in the Senate, plans to oppose the reelection of President Roosevelt.
He said in an interview last night he would support presidential electors nominated by the Anti-New Southern Democratic Party “who have the guts and brains and courage to vote against President Roosevelt’s election for a fourth term.”
The Southern Democratic Party has not yet set a date for nominating its electors.
Smith said he would vote in the Nov. 7 general election for the regular party nominees for Congress.
